“Katips” filmmaker translates Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature play to screen

There’s no turning back for stage and TV director Vince Tañada from filmmaking.

After the completion of his maiden big screen job “Katips,” a foray into student activism and dissent during the dark days of Martial Law and alluding to the revolutionary organization Katipunan during the oppressive Spanish rule, Vince has rolled his cameras on his second outing.

“Ang Bangkay,” a theater piece written by progressive artist Nonilon Queaño and a Third Prize Winner in the One-Act Play category of the 1979 Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, is now filming in Gapan, Nueva Ecija.

While in the location, Tañada with his cast and crew paid a courtesy call to the mayor of the town, Emeng Pascual.

“Ang Bangkay (The Corpse)” is a realistic drama on Extra Judicial Killings (EJKs) during the Marcos dictatorship and has shades of the present regime’s war on drugs.

The cast includes Marcedes Cabral, Vean Olmedo, Johnrey Rivas, Lili Montelibano and Juan Calma, among others.
