Korean fugitive arrested in Pasay

A Korean national wanted in South Korea for gang-related violence has been apprehended in Pasay City, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) announced Friday.

The suspect, identified as Jang Seong Woong, was arrested Thursday by agents from the NBI-Organized and Transnational Crime Division (OTCD) and the Bureau of Immigration (BI)-Fugitive Search Unit (FSU), working alongside the Korean National Police Agency (KNPA) and the Philippine Air Force (PAF) Military Intelligence.

The arrest followed an official notification from the Senior Consul of the Republic of Korea to the BI, who described Woong as an undesirable alien and a public safety threat due to his fugitive status.

An Interpol Red Notice has been issued for Woong, stemming from a warrant issued by the Daegu District Court for serious physical injury and kidnapping under Korean law.

Woong, together with other gang members, allegedly detained and violently assaulted a victim using a baseball bat in connection with the victim’s gambling debts.

The BI reported that Woong arrived in the Philippines on May 1, 2017, on a tourist visa initially valid for 30 days. He subsequently applied for visa extensions, with the latest valid until January 28, 2020.

NBI Director Jaime Santiago praised the NBI-OTCD agents and thanked the BI-FSU, PAF-Military Intelligence, and KNPA for their critical assistance in capturing the fugitive.
