Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino (MPP)’s Natatanging Gawad Urian is the highest honor bestowed by the prestigious and progressive critics group to achievements of film artists.
To receive this recognition is a lifetime precious possession a film artist can muster in his or her craft.
In its 44th year, the MPP has collectively chosen internationally renowned filmmaker Lav Diaz as the most important film artist when he receives his trophy on October 21, 2021 in a virtual live awarding on TVUP’s YouTube Channel and the MPP’s Facebook page.
Asked about his reaction on the award, Lav said: “Salamat. Mas malaking hamon ito para pag-ibayuhin pa ang trabaho para sa kultura (Thanks. This is a big challenge to strengthen media work for the advancement of culture).”
According to Rolando Tolentino, one of the active members of the Urian Awards, Lav films have reminded us of the director’s commitment to truth and social change.
They are also echoes of the past and current states of society: “…Lav Diaz whose films remind us to #NeverForget #NeverAgain martial law, Marcoses and even the Dutertes,” Roland, Tolentino’s nickname, wrote on his social media territories.
Aside from the equivalent of a lifetime achievement award, Diaz is also nominated in three categories of the 2021 Gawad Urian, namely Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography for “Lahi, Hayop.”
