Lawmakers salute Eala’s historic feat

The Senate has unanimously adopted a resolution honoring Alex Eala for becoming the first Filipino to capture a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour-level singles title, with lawmakers describing her victory as a milestone for Philippine sports and a call for greater investment in athletes.

The chamber approved Proposed Senate Resolution No. 554, which consolidated 36 separate resolutions commending Eala for winning the 2026 Mubadala DC Open women’s singles championship.

Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian said Eala’s achievement showed that Filipino athletes can compete and succeed on the global stage through discipline, perseverance, and years of dedicated training.

“Alex has shown all of us that the Filipina can stand among giants and prevail,” Gatchalian said, recalling Eala’s journey from learning tennis at age four to training at the Rafael Nadal Academy in Spain and eventually becoming a Grand Slam junior champion.

Sen. Joel Villanueva, who sponsored the resolution, said Eala’s championship was the result of years of hard work rather than a single breakthrough moment. He noted that the Filipino star defeated several top-ranked players, including Leylah Fernandez, Elina Svitolina, Naomi Osaka and Jessica Pegula, en route to the title.

Lawmakers said Eala’s victory has become a source of national pride, with Sen. JV Ejercito describing the triumph as a rare moment that united Filipinos regardless of political affiliation.

“Walang kulay. Walang paksyon. Walang kampo; iisa ang ating bandila, iisa ang ating bayan,” Ejercito said.

Several senators also urged the government to match its recognition with stronger support for Filipino athletes. Sen. Robin Padilla said Eala’s success should inspire reforms that would provide sustainable funding for athletes from the grassroots to the international level, while Sen. Risa Hontiveros said the tennis champion has become a role model for young Filipinos, especially girls aspiring to compete on the world stage.

The senators agreed that Eala’s historic title should serve not only as a celebration of her achievement but also as an opportunity to strengthen the country’s sports development programs for future generations.
