Solon supports push for easier solar adoption

An advocate of renewable energy in Congress has thrown his support behind President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s proposal to simplify the installation of rooftop solar systems, saying easier access to the technology would help households cope with high electricity costs.

Abra Lone District Rep. JB Bernos welcomed the President’s appeal for the passage of the proposed Sariling Kuryente Act, which seeks to make the installation of solar panels and battery storage systems more accessible and affordable for Filipino families.

“I wholeheartedly support the President’s call. Matagal na nating sinasabi na kailangang mabawasan ang pagdepende natin sa non-renewable energy sources at gumamit ng mga renewable energy sources na marami sa atin, gaya ng solar,” Bernos said.

The lawmaker, who authored House Bill No. 3126, said the government should remove unnecessary permit requirements and lengthy approval processes that discourage consumers from investing in solar technology.

His proposed measure seeks to require all national government agencies and local government units to install on-grid solar energy systems in government-owned buildings and offices to reduce electricity expenses and promote the wider use of renewable energy.

Bernos said more Filipinos are now considering solar power because of rising electricity prices and the growing availability of affordable systems, but many are discouraged by complex regulatory procedures.

Under the Renewable Energy Act of 2008, consumers may install renewable energy facilities of up to 100 kilowatts under the net metering program, allowing excess electricity generated by their solar systems to be exported to the power grid in exchange for bill credits.

Households participating in the program are required to register their systems with their local government units and coordinate with their distribution utilities to enable the transfer of excess electricity to the grid.
