Loren Legarda and Lorenzo Leviste

Loren Legarda’s motherhood decried by own son

It’s ironic that Lorenzo Antonio Leviste has castigated her own mom Loren Legarda a couple of days before the celebration of Mother’s Day because of his parent’s politics.

In his open letter-cum-opinion piece published in the online site Rappler, Lorenzo said “I need everyone to know that Loren Legarda lost her son forever because of this. Paint her bright red with that shame. Don’t let her forget it. In the words of a wise woman: I don’t know her…

“I have witnessed the last six years unfold in absolute horror. This detachment is an immense privilege, and conditioned by the immense trauma of having grown up in a country that I always recognized was sick, infected with the historical amnesia and denial that have led to this moment,» he said.

Loren is in the senatorial line-up of Marcos, Jr. and Sara Duterte’s presidential and vice-presidential candidates, respectively in the 2022 elections.

Lorenzo’s thoughts have snowballed and elicited mixed reactions, directly or indirectly, some of them are:

“…I taught my children how to defend themselves, even against me. They can take me on in single combat and beat me at it now, armed or bare-handed. The moment they achieved that, I was black and blue and so proud of them I could burst…” –Alma Anonas-Carpio, writer

“Don’t let politics ruin relationships. One of the truest tests of maturity is the ability to disagree with someone while remaining respectful.” –Cathy Sanchez-Babao, writer

“I’m not sharing the name of the website that ran that vile piece written by Loren Legardas’s son, because they probably think they’re doing the nation a service and have scored a huge scoop. Or, that it’s a great strategic political move. Wow lang. I remember how Loren used to throw big birthday parties for that boy, and peddle his writing to any editors who would use his (rather dramatic) film reviews and essays, including my own boss. I don’t know what went wrong along the way. Politics is fleeting. Family? For better or worse, they are what you have, along with good friends…” –Alya Honasan, writer
