President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has conferred one of the Philippines’ highest diplomatic distinctions on outgoing Sri Lankan Ambassador Chanaka Harsha Talpahewa in recognition of his role in strengthening bilateral relations and opening new investment opportunities between the two countries.
During a farewell call at Malacañang Palace last week, Marcos awarded Talpahewa the Order of Sikatuna, Rank of Datu (Grand Cross), Silver Distinction.
The award recognized the ambassador’s contributions to international relations and his service as Sri Lanka’s representative in the Philippines, where he helped advance diplomatic, economic and cultural ties.
The citation described Talpahewa as an exceptionally worthy and competent representative of the Sri Lankan government who rendered outstanding and dedicated service in international relations.
Among his notable contributions was facilitating Sri Lanka’s first investments in the Philippines through Haycarb PLC, a leading manufacturer of activated carbon, and Jaindi Exports, a coconut processing company.
The investments were established in the Visayas and Mindanao, providing new avenues for economic cooperation between the two countries.
The recognition comes as the Philippines and Sri Lanka continue to build on more than six decades of diplomatic relations, formally established on Jan. 11, 1961.
Talpahewa’s departure marks the conclusion of his diplomatic assignment in Manila, with his contributions to bilateral engagement underscoring the role of foreign missions in promoting trade, investment and closer international partnerships.
