The Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) receives a new recognition from an international organization that organizes and operates world-renowned airline and airport networking events.
Routes Asia 2017 Marketing Awards cited the MCIA as “highly commended” for airport marketing during a ceremony at Okinawa, Japan on March 20, 2017.
According to Routes’ website, “the Routes Marketing Awards were created in 1997 to recognize excellence in airport marketing as voted by airlines. They provide the airline community with the chance to have their say as to which airport they think provides the best overall marketing services to them.”
The MCIA was chosen through “online voting by airline network planning community. The airlines were requested to mark their airports or destinations of choice (five of each) in order of preference and these are automatically scored according to priority by the Routes’ online system. The voting criteria is a combination of airports voted for by the airline community on its website and the airports that have achieved the highest growth in seat capacity in the last 12 months.”
The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) awarded the P17.52 billion MCIA Public-Private Partnership (PPP) contract to GMR Infrastructure and Megawide Consortium on April 4, 2014. This PPP contract involves the construction of a new world-class passenger terminal building, and operations and maintenance (O&M) of the existing Terminal 1 and the new passenger terminal building to be built. The O&M was turned over to the private partner on November 1, 2014. On June 29, 2015, DOTC and GMR Infrastructure broke ground for the new MCIA terminal building.
The MCIA PPP project was also awarded in the past by various international organizations. It was cited by Project Finance International as the 2015 Asia-Pacific Transport Deal of the Year. IJGlobal Asia-Pacific and Center for Asia-Pacific Aviation Center for Aviation also recognized MCIA as the 2015 Best PPP Deal and the 2016 Asia-Pacific Regional Airport of the Year, respectively.
