The Filipino music scene is set for a heartwarming revival with “Idol: The April Boy Regino Story,” a biopic that captures the inspiring journey of one of the country’s most beloved music icons.
Produced by Water Plus Productions and directed by the acclaimed Efren Reyes, Jr., this film celebrates the life of April Boy Regino, the man who won the hearts of millions with his soulful voice, unforgettable melodies, and trademark baseball cap.
I feel fortunate to be part of the production. I was there when the team first met April at his home in Marikina and it seemed like a promising project. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed plans, and April sadly passed away due to an illness.
When I heard the film would finally be made, I felt renewed hope and thought, “This must be a great film.”
Indeed, it is! Especially when I saw that almost 100 percent of the film was shot in strategic locations such as Bucal and Pansol in Calamba, Laguna; San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija; Sta. Mesa, Manila; Quezon City; and even some scenes filmed in Japan, where April worked as a waiter, cook, and janitor, aside from singing.
I was deeply impressed by the film’s musical score by the renowned Boy Christopher Ramos and Christian Jumarang and the film’s theme song entitled “Sa Likod ng Tagumpay,”it truly felt like watching a Hollywood film or an internationally appealing drama.
Madelyn Regino provided all the essential details to complete the story and script under the guidance of Direk Efren Reyes, who is not only an excellent actor but also a talented director like his father, the late Efren Reyes, Sr.
April’s widow even offered the production team the opportunity to shoot at their home in Marikina, with some scenes filmed inside their private room during April’s final days when he was sick. She also lent some of April’s personal wardrobe to the actor portraying him, adding authenticity to the film.
Producer Marynette Gamboa greatly contributed by finding the perfect actor to portray April, and she succeeded with flying colors.
The chosen actor, who passed the audition for April’s role, is a natural talent and could very well win an acting award. In addition to his acting skills, the actor truly resembles April in terms of looks, voice, and charisma.
The producer found someone who didn’t just resemble April Boy but also sang, moved, and embodied his spirit. Indeed, it was a tough role for an actor who could do justice to April’s journey.
Of course, the vision for the film comes from director Reyes, who knew April Boy personally. As the writer, he was committed to capturing the true essence of the singer to which the film effectively showcased. “I want to show the real April Boy–not just the performer but the man behind the stage,” Reyes explains. He even conducted interviews with Madelyn, April Boy’s wife, many times, to make sure every detail is authentic, which the film has shown.
Production staff who have seen the unfinished film praised the actors for giving justice to their roles.
Beacon of hope for millions
April Boy Regino was more than just a singer; he was a beacon of hope for millions.” From selling banana cue on the streets to becoming a music icon, his story showcases resilience and the power of dreams. With hits like “Paano ang Puso Ko,” “Umiiyak ang Puso,” and “Di Ko Kayang Tanggapin,” he became an OPM (Original Pilipino Music) legend, and this journey was dramatically delivered to the audience.
Every scene was treated very well, the words used are relatable and the journey of April to success will resonate with all generations. It showcases April Boy’s journey from his rise to fame to his battle with illness.
“There are many truly tear-jerking scenes. It broke my heart. Especially when I heard the movie’s theme song, I thought, ‘This is the perfect tribute for a great man,” the film producer proudly mentions.
Despite the high costs and the challenges of shooting during typhoons, the lady producer feels fulfilled and happy with the outcome.
The actor playing April Boy is John Arcenas, while Kate Yalung takes on the role of Madelyn. According to Director Reyes, “John has captured the essence of April Boy, and Kate portrays Madelyn beautifully!”
Both Kate and John surpass expectations set by the production. Their rapport shines through in every scene, making them a dynamic duo to watch and perhaps new discoveries in Filipino cinema. John and Kate are true-blooded actors.
Also starring in the film are Dindo Arroyo as Tatay Tomas, Rey PJ Abellana as Daddy de Leon, Tanya Gomez as Nanay Lucy and Irene Celebre as Kapitana Mommy de Leon. April Boy’s siblings are portrayed by Jimsen Jason as Vingo and Migz Colomas as Jimmy. Indeed, even a movie critic can attest to the praise directed toward the filmmakers, including Armand Reyes (Associate Producer), Jimmy Concepcion (Line Producer), Gilbert Obispo (Director of Photography and Film Editor), Cyrus Khan (Production Designer), and Associate Director Jose “Kaka” Balagtas.
Admittedly, after viewing the first rough edit, the producer’s comments were enticing. She called it a masterpiece and praised the lead stars, stating they deserve to be recognized as the best actor and actress. She also feels confident that she made the right choice in casting them.
