Meralco expands smart metering rollout

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) is stepping up investments in smart metering technology to modernize its power distribution system, improve operational efficiency and strengthen the security of its metering network.

Meralco Vice President and Corporate Communications Head Joe Zaldarriaga said the company is enhancing its Elevated Metering Transformation (EMX), an upgraded platform integrated with its Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) as part of its broader grid modernization and digitalization program.

The EMX enables remote meter reading, disconnection and reconnection, reducing the need for on-site visits while improving the protection of metering facilities. It also provides the utility with better visibility over its distribution network, allowing faster detection of meter irregularities and electricity pilferage.

Zaldarriaga said the initiative is expected to improve service reliability for customers by speeding up meter-related transactions and supporting more efficient field operations.

He added that the investment reflects Meralco’s continued commitment to modernizing its infrastructure while reducing non-technical losses, such as power theft, and enhancing operational performance.

According to Zaldarriaga, the EMX project is part of the company’s wider deployment of smart grid technologies to meet the growing electricity requirements of its more than eight million customers while supporting a more reliable and efficient power distribution network. TRACY CABRERA
