The Philippine Navy (PN) has significantly enhanced the operational readiness of its warships and marine units, bolstering its capability to conduct operations within the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
PN spokesperson Commander John Percie Alcos emphasized in an interview on Friday that this improvement is essential for the Navy to fulfill its mandate under the Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept (CADC).
The CADC is a strategic initiative aimed at defending all Philippine territories, including the 200-nautical-mile EEZ.
“To effectively perform its active role under the CADC, the Navy has been tirelessly enhancing the operational readiness of our units, particularly our warships and marine forces, to project naval power within the EEZ,” Alcos stated.
While declining to disclose specific numbers for security reasons, Alcos noted that the Navy now has a record number of operationally ready warships and aircraft capable of conducting extensive naval and maritime operations.
To further strengthen its capabilities, the PN will focus on sustained maritime operations to ensure the nation’s maritime security. These efforts are complemented by the Navy’s ongoing modernization program, which will deliver advanced assets in the coming years.
The modernization program includes the acquisition of two brand-new guided missile corvettes and six offshore patrol vessels from South Korean defense contractor HD Hyundai Heavy Industries.
Additionally, two landing dock platforms are being constructed by Indonesian shipbuilder PT PAL. These new assets are expected to be delivered within the next two to three years.
The PN is also set to commission three batteries of Indian-made BrahMos anti-ship missiles, to be operated by Marine units.
Furthermore, additional anti-submarine helicopters will be acquired to enhance the capabilities of the forthcoming guided missile corvettes.
Commander Alcos highlighted that the PN remains committed to pursuing its modernization program while fostering partnerships with like-minded navies to further enhance its operational capacity and regional presence.
