No burial schedule yet for Jukebox King April Boy Regino

As per visit and offering of last respects of movie scribe and best friend Linda Cabuhayan yesterday, Jukebox King April Boy Regino has no date of burial yet. “Wala pa (No schedule yet),” said Linda who considers the dead singer his loyal buddy in show business.

April Boy, Dennis Regino Magloyuan Magdaraog in real life, died of lingering illnesses on Sunday morning at home.

According to Cabuhayan, Regino had suffered several ailments in the past like prostate cancer, kidney failure and diabetes. “Halu-halo na ang ikinamatay niya (What caused his death was mixed-up),” informed Cabuhayan.

April Boy’s remains lie at state in his home in Calumpang in Marikina City. It was his wife Madel Magdaraog who received the mourners to condole with her and family. Linda said the singer wore his baseball cap, a trademark of his image as an idol of the masses when he would throw to his fans his cap and shirts during live performances.

Entertainment writer Art Tapalla remembered Regino as a newcomer in the early 90s. “Pumunta siya kasama ang kanyang inang si Mommy Lucy sa movie writer na kaibigan natin na namatay na rin na si Kuya Gil Villasana. Kasi, nakiusap sila kay Kuya Gil na kung puwedeng asikasuhin niya ang guesting ni April Boy sa ‘That’s Entertainment’ ni Kuya Germs. Kinuha rin nila na publisista si Kuya Gil ng April Boys (April Boy with his mom Lucy went to the late friend writer and Big Brother Gil Villasana. They requested him a guesting in the late German Moreno in ‘That’s Entertainment. They also got him to publicize and to officially make him their publicist),” recounted Art.

April Boy parted ways with his brothers Vingo and Jimmy when they dissolved their trio April Boy after a number of years. During the struggling days of his music career, the singer got married with Madel.

Kaya lang, naaasiwa ako sa misis ni April Boy na si Madel na naka-burgundy ang buhok habang nakayakap sa bangkay ng asawa (But I just felt awkward that his wife Madel was in her burgundy hair while hugging and crying over the dead body of her husband),” commented Tapalla.

This writer has also varied encounters with April Boy and his brothers. When they launched their group, they first had personal appearances in my radio show “XQ’s Me” in DZXQ in the early 1990s. Even when he went solo, he still had guesting stint in my program.

Meanwhile, there are many fellow singers who paid their personal tributes to April Boy like Gary Valenciano, Jaya, Imelda Papin, Michael Laygo etc. They all recalled their happy and memorable moments with the dead when they did shows together.            Actresses Beverly Vergel, Liz Alindogan, Yvonne Salcedo had expressed their sadness over the passing of the iconic singer who made popular the songs “Di Ko Kayang Tanggapin,” “Paano ang Puso Ko,” “Umiiyak ang Puso Ko” etc.
