P4.2-B fund earmarked for new teaching posts

The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has approved the release of P4.194 billion to fund the creation of 16,000 new teaching positions in public schools nationwide for School Year 2025–2026.

The move is part of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s directive to bolster the country’s education sector and address the shortage of qualified teachers in the public school system.

DBM Secretary Amenah “Mina” Pangandaman announced that the newly approved posts represent the first batch of a 20,000-teacher hiring plan for 2025.

“The DBM’s approval of the 16,000 new teaching positions is in adherence to our President’s directive to strengthen our country’s education system. This move is also in support of the Department of Education’s efforts to boost the teaching workforce across Kindergarten, Elementary, Junior High School, Senior High School, and the Alternative Learning System,” Pangandaman pointed out.

Of the 16,000 new slots, 15,343 are for Teacher I positions with Salary Grade 11, offering monthly salaries ranging from P22,316 to P24,319. The DBM also approved 157 posts for Special Science Teachers with Salary Grade 13 (P25,282 to P28,969) and 500 positions for Special Education (SPED) Teachers with Salary Grade 14 (P29,277 to P31,405).

To provide greater deployment flexibility, Pangandaman said that teaching positions for Senior High School will be established at the division level. This setup allows School Division Superintendents to assign teachers to areas with the most urgent staffing needs.

She further explained that the P4.194 billion budget will be sourced from the Department of Education’s built-in appropriations under the 2025 General Appropriations Act, specifically allocated for the hiring of additional teaching personnel. TRACY CABRERA
