The PhilPop MusicFest Foundation is set to expand nationwide this year by holding the PhilPop Songwriting Boot Camp on certain dates and in key cities across the country, with the aim of inspiring and encouraging Filipino songwriters and helping them grow.
The boot camp—which has #dumadagundong2017 as its theme to reflect the nonprofit organization’s goal of extending its reach and creating a positive impact on Filipino songwriters—shall be held in Antipolo City in Rizal province from May 11 to 14, Baguio City in Benguet province from July 13 to 16, Cebu City from September 14 to 17, and Davao City from November 23 to 26.
Composer Ryan Cayabyab and singer-songwriter Noel Cabangon will act as boot camp masters, and they will be joined by other renowned Filipino songwriters, musicians and industry leaders as coaches. Previous PhilPop Songwriting Competition winners will also join as alumni coaches to help inspire and encourage those chosen to join the boot camp.
“We are happy that PhilPop decided to reach out to more Filipino songwriters by having boot camp sites across the country. PhilPop is born out of faith in Filipino music,” PhilPop Chairman Manny V. Pangilinan said.
“We from the MVP Group believe in Filipino creativity. We believe in Filipino musicians and artists. PhilPop is about empowering Filipino composers to create music that can inspire and motivate a nation,” he added.
“For five years already, PhilPop has taken the lead in encouraging songwriters to churn out original Filipino sound to remind the world that Filipinos are not only great singers and performers, but also great songwriters, (and) that P-Pop deserves a spot on the world stage,” Pangilinan said.
For his part, Cayabyab said he’s one with Philpop in “teaching the next generation everything that I know whenever possible.”
“The PhilPop Songwriting Boot Camp is designed to be the best venue to meet and interact like-minded people, such as composers and singers, music-industry executives, and advocates to exchange ideas, learn from each other and build inspired communities and networks,” Cayabyab said.
“Essentially, the boot camp is about encouraging songwriters to produce excellent musical compositions, share their masterpieces, submit entries to songwriting contests, and go for their dreams as artists,” he added.
20 fellows
Filipinos 16 years old and older can apply to the Philpop Songwriting Boot Camp. They must reside in or near the area where the boot camps will be held: Antipolo for those in Central and Southern Luzon; Baguio for Northern and Central Luzon; Cebu for those in the Visayas, and Davao for those in Mindanao. Applicants from Metro Manila can join the Antipolo or Baguio boot camp. Interested songwriters can apply via online registration on PhilPop’s website—philpop.com.ph—until March 31.
Twenty fellows per boot camp will be chosen to join the three-day all-expense-paid session full of enriching activities with veteran composers, lyricists, musicians, former PhilPop winners and music-industry executives as coaches. Fellows who will be sponsored to join the boot camp shall automatically be part of the Top 300 of the PhilPop Songwriting Competition in 2018.
Aside from the 20 sponsored fellows, limited slots are allotted per boot-camp site for those willing to invest a minimum amount for the training. Regular fellows will have to pay a training fee of P15,000 to cover food, accommodation, and training kit.
The PhilPop Songwriting Boot Camp is co-presented by Maynilad Water Services Inc. with Bughaw Digital as digital partner, Sindikato Productions as video partner, and Uber as official-land transportation partner. It is organized by The Pinnacle. Philpop 2017 is also supported by the Office of the Vice President and the National Youth Commission.
