PHL named world’s top retirement destination

The Philippines emerged the world’s top retirement destination for 2026, ranking first in the Retirement Abroad Index 2026, according to international health insurance provider Expatriate Group, which evaluated 20 countries across over 180 nations.

Earlier, the country was recognized as Best Retirement Destination in Asia at the 2025 TripZilla Excellence Awards.

The Retirement Abroad Index 2026 evaluated countries on healthcare quality, visa accessibility, health insurance requirements, cost of living and expat community and integration.

The Philippines ranked first across all indicators to secure the top overall position.

A flagship initiative of the Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA), the Special Resident Retiree’s Visa, provides qualified foreigners a path to long-term residency in the country.

Department of Tourism Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay said the recognition supports government efforts to position the Philippines as a premier destination for all age segments.

She said the country stands out for its hospitality, affordable living, quality services and vibrant communities that allow retirees to live, travel and thrive.

PRA general-manager and chief executive Bob Zozobrado said the recognition affirms the country’s growing status as a retirement hub. He said PRA remains committed to improving the retirement experience for foreign nationals and showcasing the Philippines as a “home away from home.”

The PRA said the ranking reflects ongoing efforts to create an environment where retirees can live, connect and thrive, strengthening the country’s position as a global retirement destination.
