President Marcos has appointed veteran journalist and Market Monitor Lifestyle Editor Nestor Cuartero as member of the board of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB), effective immediately.
Cuartero, who joined the weekly business newspaper TMM last year, will join Maria Rosario Fabregas, and Maria Cecilia Villarosa as the newest members of the MTRCB, headed by Chairman Diorella “Lala” Sotto-Antonio.
The three new appointees will serve until September 30, 2026.
A Bachelor of Arts graduate with a degree i. Journalism at the University of Santo Tomas in 1974, Cuartero is best known for his insightful articles and engaging storytelling that has garnered numerous awards and accolades
Cuartero was a faculty member and former coordinator of its Journalism Department of UST. He was also an associate at UST’s Center for Creative Writing and Literary Studies.
A long-time editor at the Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation for 36 years, Cuuartero also won several awards in journalism.
Among these are: Grand Prize in Primer Premio de Periodismo given by Instituto Cervantes in 2000; First Prize in the 2007 La Sallian Scholarum Awards for coverage of youth and education issues in media; 2010 Binhi Awards’ Environment Journalist of the Year from the Philippine Agricultural Journalists (PAJ).
Cuartero is also a two-time SALUTE awardee (2023 and 2024) at the Nick Joaquin Literary Awards (NJLA) given by Philippines Graphic Magazine for both poetry and short story.
His online column on life and entertainment, Passerby. is still widely followed.
As a noted book author, Cuartero has already written three books; At Large, At Leisure, PH Movie Confidential, and Easy Listening. He has also co-written, in tandem with other writers, several other books.
In 2012, he was among 10 outstanding alumni in various fields, including Journalism, honored by the UST Faculty of Arts and Letters through the AB Gantimpala Award.
