The Dimensity 8100 has become a popular option for upper mid-range smartphones due to its incredible performance, while the Dimensity 7200, which is found on the vivo V27, has proven to be a great, more power-efficient alternative.
Recently, we have been really impressed with MediaTek’s Dimensity CPUs. While we wait for MediaTek’s other chips, buyers should exercise caution because some of the company’s products are simply rebranded versions of older chips that the company already has in its lineup.
The new name for the Dimensity 6020, which is really just a new moniker for the entry-level Dimensity 700 that MediaTek announced back in 2020, is a great illustration of this.
And it appears that other MediaTek chips have also chosen to rebrand, as Twitter user GadgetsData identified two additional MediaTek chips in addition to the Dimensity 6020. The Dimensity 6080, a renamed Dimensity 810, and the Dimensity 7020, a rebranded Dimensity 930, are two examples.
To determine whether GadgetsData’s claims are accurate, we compared the differences between the Dimensity 7020 and Dimensity 930 and found that they are nearly identical based on their specifications. The Dimensity 7020 supports 2-lane UFS 3.1 storage, which should result in quicker read and write rates, and includes a native 108-megapixel camera support (the Dimensity 930 offers this feature as an option). These are the main distinguishing features. The Dimensity 810 and Dimensity 6080 are identical in all other respects except for the fact that the latter natively supports 108-megapixel cameras.
The only answer we can come up with is that MediaTek wants to streamline their naming strategy to have four digits instead of three digits, which is why it has chosen to release “new” CPUs as renamed copies of previous chips. We do not yet know when we will be able to purchase a phone that employs a Dimensity 6020, 6080, or 7020 processor, but we anticipate that one of these three will be included in future entry-level to lower mid-range 5G handsets.
This is not the first time that MediaTek has released “new” processors under renamed models; the Helio G35, which was simply the Helio P35 under a new moniker, was an example of this. The Dimensity 1300, a new term for the Dimensity 1200, is a more recent illustration.
