The road leading to the Senate impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte is increasingly becoming a battlefield of political maneuvering and disinformation. The vacuum created by the Duterte camp’s refusal to directly and comprehensively answer the allegations dissected at the House Justice Committee has allowed speculation, propaganda, and conspiracy theories to flourish. Instead of confronting the charges head-on, the strategy appears focused on shifting the narrative toward political persecution, thereby energizing a fiercely loyal support base that remains intact despite damaging testimonies and documentary evidence.
Attempts to derail the impeachment process are expected to intensify even before the articles are formally transmitted to the Senate. Legal technicalities, procedural delays, and coordinated online disinformation campaigns will likely be deployed to influence public perception and pressure lawmakers. This is no longer just a constitutional process; it is rapidly evolving into an early proxy war for the 2028 presidential elections.
The bigger question is whether the Duterte political machinery can survive a possible conviction. The loyalty of Duterte supporters resembles the once impenetrable Solid North machinery that sustained the Marcos family through decades of political exile and eventual resurgence. In both cases, emotional loyalty often outweighs objective assessment of facts. Such political devotion has become one of the defining features of Philippine electoral politics.
Yet the impeachment drama may also reshape the next presidential race in unexpected ways. If Sara Duterte is removed from contention, new political figures could emerge to occupy the vacuum. Names already being floated include Raffy Tulfo, Antonio Trillanes IV, Jonvic Remulla, Risa Hontiveros and Bam Aquino. Meanwhile, Leni Robredo and Tulfo have publicly downplayed presidential ambitions.
Still, before surveys, endorsements and political alliances further cloud the landscape, the Senate faces a more urgent responsibility: determining whether the Vice President remains fit to seek higher office. The credibility of democratic institutions now depends on whether senators will treat impeachment as a solemn constitutional duty rather than a mere rehearsal for 2028.
