South Cotabato Province has made history once more not in the geo-political upheavals but in the socio-cultural breakthroughs as well.

They are the mix of the indigenous and contemporary social traditions and heritage reserves.

Just like some of its Koronadal residents who gathered together to showcase their musical as well as literary prowess in rap and traditional rendition of jousts.

Bagong Koronadal Advocates took to the 2024 Baraptasan stage Saturday afternoon at the Rizal Open-Air Auditorium to present their form and contents of the hybrid of Balagtasan, a historic poetic joust and rap which won them Grand Prize among nine other opponents.

Bagong Koronadal Advocates took home P300,000.00 and other prizes.

Ang mga Anak ni Angela of Tabaco City, Albay, romped away the Second Prize with P200,000.00 cash prize.

Meanwhile, two winners were declared Third Prizes, namely DMD of Makati City and Harayasista of Labo, Camarines Norte with P100,000.00 cash prize each.

Baraptasan 2024 was part of the program Kanto Kultura organized by the Committee of Arts Education of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).

Kanto Kultura was conceptualized by music educator and singer Michelle Nikki Junia when she was still a member of the CCP Board of Trustees in collaboration with other members and officers of the Committee.

During the Baraptasan, Michelle Nikki was a member of the Board of Judges together with famed poet Teo Antonio and Board Member Stanley Seludo.

In his inspirational speech National Artist for Literature Virgilio Almario, better known as Rio Alma, spoke of the historical significance of Balagtasan in 1924 when Jose Corazin de Jesus, also known as Huseng Batute and Florentino Collantes fought for the supremacy of the Balagtasan, inspired by poet Francisco Balagtas.

Baraptasan 2024 coincided with the celebration of the centenary of Balagtasan.
