BANGKOK — Islay Bomogao is on a roll, having won multiple matches this year in her professional career as a Muay Thai fighter in Singapore promotion ONE Championship, but as she faces a new challenge in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games, she’s staying on her guard.
The No. 1 ranked -45kg fighter in the country leads the Philippines’ Muay contingent here as they vie to add to the Philippines’ medal haul in the biennial meet.
But even as she faces tremendous success in her career, Bomogao remains on her toes against all her opponents.
“For sure, solid po lahat. This is a big event kaya each country is putting forward their best and most experienced athletes.” said Bomogao.
“I don’t really single out one big threat. Anyone can be tough depending on the day. So I’m just focused on myself and making sure I’m ready for whoever I face.”
She last fought in late November, coincidentally also in Thailand at the Lumpinee Stadium, where the SEA Games Muay competition will also be held, knocking out Ploychompoo PU Phabai of Thailand in the second round of an atomweight competition.
The Muay team also features Rudzma Abubakar, Kim Ryan Asense, Mark Jeremy Balmoris, Mathew Blane Comicho, Eunicka Kaye Costales, Phillip Delarmino, Ejay Galendez, Tyron Jamborillo, Ariel Lee Lampacan, Alyssa Kylie Mallari, Floryvic Montero, Jan Brix Ramiscal, and LJ Rafael Yasay.
Muay competitions begin on Friday, December 12, at the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok.
