In response to a surge in road rage cases, senatorial candidates from Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas are advocating for stricter enforcement of existing laws, greater police presence, and legislative measures to curb violence and tighten gun control.
During a press conference in Antipolo City, the candidates addressed concerns over high-profile road altercations, including an incident involving a sport utility vehicle bearing a congressional plate.
Former senator Panfilo Lacson emphasized the importance of law enforcement, particularly in regulating firearms. He pointed out that strict gun control measures are already in place during the election period due to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) gun ban. However, he stressed that enforcing these laws remains crucial to preventing violent incidents.
Former Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos linked the rising cases of road violence to broader societal issues, such as lack of discipline and disregard for the law. He called for a more strategic deployment of law enforcement personnel in areas prone to disorder.
Former Senate President Tito Sotto reinforced the argument that the Philippines already has one of the strictest firearm regulations, requiring multiple layers of registration and licensing before an individual can own a gun. He suggested that rather than passing new laws, authorities should focus on consistent enforcement of existing ones.
Meanwhile, Congressman Erwin Tulfo revealed that the ACT-CIS party-list has already pushed forward a bill penalizing road rage incidents, which is currently on its second reading in Congress. The proposed legislation seeks to impose stricter criminal liabilities on individuals engaging in aggressive behavior on the road, including penalties ranging from three to 20 years in prison, depending on the severity of the offense.
As concerns over public safety grow, the candidates stressed the urgent need for firm action to deter violence and restore order on the country’s roads.
