Seaport hub to be built in Casiguran town

Discussions are underway to establish a seaport within the ecozone of Casiguran, Aurora, with the Aurora Pacific Economic Zone and Freeport Authority (Apeco) spearheading the initiative in partnership with a New York-based company and the Department of National Defense (DND).

Apeco President and CEO Gil Taway IV revealed in a recent interview that he is set to embark on a follow-up investment mission to the United States this week. His goal is to engage with potential investors, particularly those interested in developing seaport and defense hub infrastructure within the zone.

Taway mentioned that one of their key meetings will be with Newmark, a leading global real estate consulting firm based in New York, which has expressed interest in financing the seaport project. “They will assist us in securing funds for the development of the seaport,” Taway said.

He added that they are keen for the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) to manage the seaport’s operations. The proposed Casiguran seaport is envisioned to be a critical gateway for trade and commerce, positioning Apeco as a strategic hub for local and international businesses, particularly in sectors like agro-industry, renewable energy, defense, and tourism.

In addition to engaging with Newmark, Apeco will also meet with U.S. companies involved in the defense supply chain, including Anglicotech, which already operates in Subic, Zambales.

Taway further shared that DND Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. is interested in utilizing 50 hectares within the ecozone for military purposes, adding that “the DND has offered to take charge of developing both the airport and seaport.”
