Who is Archbishop Teofilo Camomot, DD?

Rev. Fr. Camomot was a native of Carcar, Cebu who was ordained a diocesan priest of the Archdiocese of Cebu in 1941 and later appointed as auxiliary bishop in 1955.

Endearingly called Father Lolong, Camomot became coadjutor archbishop of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro in 1958, becoming a titular archbishop of Marcianopolis. While waiting for then-archbishop James Hayes to retire, Camomot resigned for health reasons in 1970. He was killed in a vehicular accident in 1988 at the age of 74.

During his lifetime, Camomot had shown performing miracles and kindness to the poor and the marginalized.

A process has been undertaken that would lead to his canonization as the next Filipino saint when the late Pope Francis, after the appropriate procedures had been carried out, elevated Camomot to the status of Venerable—a title given to a deceased person who has attained a certain degree of sanctity but has not been fully canonized of beatified.

During an intimate Q&A with producer and director Ben Yalung of Cine Suerte, Inc., he said that everything is in place in the making of the still untitled Camomot biopic written by Celso de Guzman.

“We will shoot before the year ends. We are looking for actors to play various roles in the movie,” informed Yalung.

He said that his production is in the lookout of “named” actors to portray the lead actor—as a kid (looks 8-10 years old on screen), adult (20s-30s, during his seminary years), and senior (50s-60s, as bishop).

According to Ben, there are initial picks to don the archbishop’s vestment like Paulo Avelino and Cedric Juan.

Entertainment news hen Aster Amoyo suggested the bankability of Piolo Pascual as Camomot while movie journalist Marinel Cruz and entertainment editor Nathalie Tomada rooted for Coco Martin.

How about you, dear reader, who is your pick?  (Boy Villasanta)
