President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has signed into law Republic Act 12305, or the Philippine National Nuclear Energy Safety Act, establishing an independent agency to regulate the safe use of nuclear energy and radiation sources in the country.
The new body, called the Philippine Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (PhilATOM), will oversee nuclear-related activities and ensure compliance with international safety standards, including commitments with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Presidential Communications Office announced.
“PhilATOM will be tasked with protecting people and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation, issuing licenses for nuclear-related activities, and ensuring strict regulation of radioactive materials,” PCO Undersecretary Clarissa “Claire” Castro-Seechung said.
The law requires PhilATOM to coordinate with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council on nuclear emergency preparedness and response.
RA 12305 also sets strict safeguards, prohibiting the unauthorized siting, construction, operation, or decommissioning of nuclear facilities, as well as the unlawful acquisition, manufacture, import, or disposal of radioactive materials.
Violators face penalties of up to ₱100 million in fines and possible imprisonment. TRACY CABRERA
