Japan sends experts to help Navotas landfill fire response

A specialized disaster response team from Japan has been deployed to assist Philippine authorities in managing the aftermath of the massive landfill fire in Navotas City.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency said the move was carried out under the Japan Disaster Relief (JDR) Operations after an official request from the Philippine government, following the blaze that erupted on April 10 at a 41-hectare landfill site.

A six-member team arrived in Manila on Thursday and is expected to work closely with local agencies on technical assessments, site inspections, and response coordination.

The fire has raised public health and environmental concerns due to thick toxic smoke that spread across nearby communities, including parts of Navotas and evacuation areas in Obando, Bulacan.

According to JICA, the experts will support Philippine responders in evaluating conditions on the ground and strengthening ongoing containment and recovery efforts.

The JDR mechanism is Japan’s primary framework for emergency international assistance, providing rapid technical and humanitarian support during major disasters in partner countries.
