The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will host a public watch party at the Philsports Arena on Monday, July 5, as Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala continues her historic Wimbledon campaign.
Fans will be able to cheer on Eala as she faces Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in the round of 16, with gates opening at 5:30 p.m. Seating is free and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. hailed Eala’s breakthrough as a triumph for the Filipino people—an inspiring milestone that showcases the nation’s talent and resilience.
“Alex’s victory is a source of immense pride for the nation. Hosting this watch party is our way of uniting Filipinos to celebrate her journey and to show her that the entire country is behind her,’’ said PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio.
The event, presented by the PSC, MMDA and the Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA), can accommodate up to 8,000 fans.
The crowd at the Philsports Arena will also get to enjoy a double treat, as the Gilas Pilipinas face Australia in the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers at 6:30 p.m.
“The MMDA is one with supporting Alex and other Filipino athletes who represent the country on the global stage as part of our broader commitment to fostering national pride and community spirit among Metro Manila residents,” said MMDA Chairman Don Artes.
Sponsored by Cignal, PLDT, MediaQuest, Smart and MVP Sports Foundation, the match will also be livestreamed via Pilipinas Live, ensuring nationwide access to the action.
MediaQuest Holdings Inc. President and CEO Ricky Vargas said business tycoon and sports patron Manny V. Pangilinan is throwing his full support behind the watch party ahead of his 80th birthday on July 14.
Eala advanced to the round of 16 after a stunning victory over defending champion and world No. 3 Iga Swiatek on Saturday.
The Filipino tennis heroine’s triumph carried historic significance as Eala became the first Filipina in the Open Era to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam. It was her seventh career win against a top-10 player, and her third on grass.
“Sa PHILTA, lagi naming sinasabi na `Tennis Transforms.’ Hindi lang nito binabago ang laro—binabago nito ang buhay. It teaches discipline, resilience, confidence at nagbibigay ng mga oportunidad na hind imo akalaing posible,” said PHILTA Secretary General and Navotas City Mayor John Rey Tiangco.
Eala now leads Swiatek 2-1 in their head-to-head record, having previously beaten her at the 2025 Miami Open. Her WTA ranking rose from No. 32 to a projected No. 28, while Swiatek slipped to No. 6.
The watch party is supported by the Pasig City government under Mayor Vico Sotto, ensuring smooth logistics and crowd management for the expected turnout.
