This morning, America’s awards-show season begins in earnest when the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announces the winners of its 72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards at the posh Beverly Hilton Hotel in Hollywood.
Established in 1943 by a handful of Los Angeles-based foreign journalists who sought to bridge the international community with Hollywood, the Golden Globes—which is hosted by comedic actresses Tina Fey and Amy Poehler for the third time this year—is regarded as one of the top events in the US film industry’s social calendar. It is closely watched by industry insiders and film enthusiasts alike, for they see it as a very reliable indicator on who would be nominated for—and win—an Academy Award, also known as the Oscar, Hollywood’s top prize.
Until about two decades ago, the Golden Globes was unique among awards shows, for it simultaneously honors accomplishments in film and television, making it one of the very few public events where stars from both mediums can socialize freely. The Golden Globes is considered as a more relaxed and less formal version of the Oscars, primarily because of its venue—the iconic hotel’s ballroom—and because food and drinks are served during the ceremony.
The Golden Globes comes after various US film critics’ groups unveiled whom they deem the best performers and filmmakers of the past year. Many of them are vying for a Golden Globe this morning; some have even won in the past.
Leading the list of film nominations is Alejandro González Iñárritu’s audacious Birdman, with seven, followed by Richard Linklater’s critically lauded Boyhood and Morten Tyldum’s World War II-era drama The Imitation Game, both with five.
