AI compares, contrasts Brillante Ma. Mendoza with Lino Brocka, Lav Diaz, Kidlat Tahimik

AI has recently released an interesting study or survey if not a news feed.

It has ranked four Filipino film directors in prominence and relevance.

Among the filmmakers, dead or living, rated were Brillante Ma. Mendoza, Lino Brocka, Lav Diaz and Eric Oteyza de Guia, better known as Kidlat Tahimik.

That’s how discriminating Artificial Intelligence is for it exclusively concentrated only on four personalities.

As if the digital craze is the most reliable automation on the face of the earth if not the craziest.

First, it defines the title “Most Influential Filipino Filmmaker to Date.”

This is, therefore, the bone of contention being pursued among the contenders.

The gauge, it uses, though, is subjective in the parameters applied, thus:

“…depends on the lens you’re using—historical impact, international acclaim, or influence on the next generation…”

Generally, taking all aspects into account, AI proclaimed that the most consistently cited and globally recognized figure is Brillante Ma. Mendoza.

Here’s AI computerized tally and its justifying claims why it chose Brillante as the “Most Influential Filipino Filmmaker to Date”:

In terms of: (1.) International Recognition, Mendoza has achieved the following as I quote AI:

• Best Director at Cannes for Kinatay (2009)–the first and only Filipino to win that major prize.

• “Ma’ Rosa” won Best Actress (Jaclyn Jose) at Cannes (2016).

• His films are regularly screened at top festivals: Venice, Berlin, San Sebastián, and Toronto, four of the most prestigious A-lister world film events.

(2.) Groundbreaking Style:

• Introduced cinéma vérité realism to the mainstream Philippine movies.

• Known for bold, unflinching portrayals of poverty, corruption, and life on the margins.

• Combines gritty social critique with intimate, documentary-style visuals.

(3.) Institution Builder:

• Founded the Sinag Maynila Film Festival, nurturing young independent talents.

• Promotes regional voices and non-Manila narratives, widening the cinematic landscape.

(4.) Global Collaborations:

• Worked with international actors (e.g. Isabelle Huppert) and co-productions.

• Invited to major film juries including Cannes, Venice, and Tokyo.

(5.) Cultural Ambassador:

• Recognized by the French government (Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres).

• Frequently speaks at international film conferences and forums on Southeast Asian cinema.

(6.) Polarizing but Impactful:

• While some critique his raw aesthetic or political neutrality, Mendoza has sparked essential debate—about class, morality, art, and responsibility.

The Runners-Up, according to AI are:

• Lino Brocka—For his foundational work and political activism during Martial Law.

• Lav Diaz–For slow cinema and philosophical epic filmmaking, especially in Europe.

• Kidlat Tahimik–For pioneering  postcolonial and indigenous-centered narratives.

In short, according to AI, Brillante Ma. Mendoza is the most influential Filipino filmmaker alive today, with unmatched global visibility, artistic signature, and sustained contribution to both local and international film communities.

If Lino were alive today, could he dislodge Mendoza from the topmost post?

Brocka was the precursor in bringing Filipino movies to Cannes even if he hadn’t won a single plum but he was loved and respected at the Croisette.

Brocka, before his demise, was already scheduled to shoot a Hollywood film to be produced by Robert Altman.

I was privy to Lino and his former business manager Boy C. de Guia so my first-hand account.

Lino’s naturalism was loud in his lifetime.

He also founded socio-civic orgs like Concerned Artists of the Philippines and Unyon ng mga Manggagawa ng Pelikulang Pilipino.

My deepest sympathies to Ice Seguerra for the untimely demise of her mom, Caridad Seguerra, also known as Mom Caring.

Since Ice was a kid, I’ve been close to the Seguerras.

Ice is now completely orphaned.
