MC intensifies NAIA cleanup to prevent flooding

San Miguel Corp. (SMC) continues its extensive cleanup efforts around the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) complex to mitigate flooding and improve water flow.

Through its “Better Rivers PH” initiative, SMC has been rehabilitating waterways in Parañaque City and clearing flood drains around NAIA. As of Friday, the initiative has covered 2.58 kilometers and removed 129,862 tons of silt and solid waste.

SMC Chair and CEO Ramon Ang emphasized the importance of proper waste disposal, urging communities and stakeholders to refrain from dumping trash into rivers and streets, which eventually clog storm drains and waterways.

The issue of flooding at NAIA was highlighted in July 2024 when heavy rains caused the apron of Terminal 4 to be submerged. Ang acknowledged that flooding has long plagued both the airport and surrounding areas, particularly during typhoon season.

He expressed optimism that the collaborative efforts under “Better Rivers PH,” supported by government agencies, would provide lasting solutions for residents, businesses, and travelers.
