Miss Philippines-Earth still going strong on its 15th year

No other national pageant has proven that a beauty competition can act as an effective platform to push for significant reform in attitude and action. For the last 15 years, the Miss Philippines-Earth pageant has provided a stage where responsible beauty queens are crowned and the mission to promote a sustainable environment can be accomplished, even if one is wearing high heels.

It has truly been a worthwhile journey for Carousel Productions in mounting the annual advocacy-driven pageant. The concept that was once met with raised eyebrows has clearly cemented its position in the beauty pageant scene, and its pro-active queens are widely embraced by beauty pageant aficionados all over the country.

According to Carousel President Ramon Monzon, the company is very proud to have changed the way people look at women with a crown and a sash.

“Our titleholders are living proof that beauty is more than skin deep. Aside from celebrating their physical attributes, their dedication to the pageant’s cause is what made them earn and be worthy of their crowns,” Monzon said.

As Miss Philippines-Earth enters its crystal year, the pageant is, more than ever, crystal-clear with its goal to reach more people in promoting the importance of saving and protecting the environment. In addition to the initiatives of the Miss Earth Foundation, the social and civic arm of the pageant, Miss Philippines-Earth 2015 will see through a number of undertakings to further its cause and sustain the interest of its supporters.

“We are always on the lookout for ways to get more people involved with what the pageant stands for,” Carousel Executive Vice President Lorraine Shuck said. “Aside from providing entertainment value to our viewers, we also want people from all walks of life to join the movement to save the Earth.”

A new crown will be unveiled on the grand coronation night. Renowned jewelry and accessories designer Arnel Papa was commissioned to craft the crown that will mark the pageant’s crystal year.

And as a way to recognize the genius of local designers, Miss Philippines-Earth adds an exciting twist to its traditional cultural costume competition. The winning costume, regardless of the candidate wearing it, will be worn by this year’s winner as her national costume in the Miss Earth 2015 pageant, to be held later this year.

Forty-one young ladies from all over the Philippines will be competing to become the 15th Miss Philippines-Earth. From this remarkable batch of hopefuls, one lucky lady will follow the footsteps of her predecessors who have made a name for themselves in different fields. To date, the Philippines is one of three countries (Brazil and Venezuela are the other two) that have won the prestigious Miss Earth crown twice.

The grand coronation night will be on May 31, 6 p.m. at the MOA Arena. It will be telecast by the ABS-CBN television network at 10:30 p.m. of the same day.
