Over 86k families affected by Mindanao tremor – NDRRMC

The number of families affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Mindanao on June 8 has climbed to more than 86,000, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

In its latest situational update released Friday, the agency said 86,135 families—or about 392,806 individuals—across 352 barangays in Regions 9, 11, 12, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) have been impacted by the powerful tremor.

Thousands remain displaced. Of the affected population, 2,409 families or 10,783 individuals are currently staying in 31 evacuation centers, while 7,480 families or 30,265 persons are receiving assistance outside these facilities. The rest are temporarily sheltered with relatives and friends as recovery efforts continue.

Structural damage has also been extensive. Authorities reported 19,095 houses damaged, including 15,610 partially damaged and 3,845 totally destroyed.

Casualty figures continue to rise. Office of Civil Defense (OCD) deputy spokesperson Diego Agustin Mariano said the death toll has reached 55, with 1,120 injured and 31 still missing as of Friday.

Government response teams remain fully mobilized across affected areas, with military and civilian agencies working together to restore access and deliver aid to isolated communities.

The Philippine Army said its humanitarian assistance and disaster response (HADR) units have been clearing blocked roads and supporting relief operations in General Santos City, Sarangani, and Davao Occidental.

Army spokesperson Col. Louie Dema-ala said troops have been assisting local disaster officials in affected barangays in General Santos City, while emergency response teams have been deployed to conduct humanitarian operations in Labangal, Calumpang, Apopong, and Fatima.

A mobile water purification system was also set up at General Santos Medical Center to provide clean drinking water for patients and hospital personnel, later redeployed to Barangay Calumpang to serve nearby residents.

Additional Army units are assisting in damage assessment and coordination efforts in several municipalities across South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Palawan-linked coastal areas, while urban search and rescue teams continue operations in Davao Occidental.

The Philippine Air Force (PAF) has likewise intensified its airlift and relief missions in coordination with other government agencies.

From Villamor Air Base, PAF spokesperson Col. Ma. Christina Basco said 1,000 “ChariTimba” relief packs from the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office were transported to General Santos City using C-295 and C-130 aircraft.

In a separate mission, Black Hawk helicopters delivered food packs and bottled water from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) to hard-hit areas in Davao and nearby provinces. One unit also carried out medical evacuation flights from Sarangani to Cotabato for residents needing urgent treatment.

“These operations underscore the PAF’s continued commitment to rapid response, lifesaving airlift capability, and coordinated disaster relief efforts in support of national humanitarian operations,” Basco said.
