Pope Francis, affectionately known by Filipinos as “Lolo Kiko,” has passed away at the age of 88, the Vatican announced on Monday.
His passing came just a day after he made a touching appearance at Saint Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday, offering blessings and well-wishes despite still recovering from a serious illness.
“Dearest brothers and sisters, it is with deep sorrow that I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis,” said Cardinal Kevin Farrell in a statement released through the Vatican’s Telegram channel. “This morning at 7:35 a.m. (0535 GMT), the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church.”
Pope Francis had been battling pneumonia earlier this year and was hospitalized for 38 days before being discharged on March 23. He had previously faced two near-death episodes during his illness.
On Easter Sunday, he greeted thousands of faithful from the balcony of Saint Peter’s Basilica, delivering his traditional “Urbi et Orbi” (To the City and the World) message. In his address, he called for freedom of thought, tolerance, and unity.
His final public appearance, marked by joy and spiritual grace, reflected the humility and compassion that defined his papacy.
