SP Escudero introduces bill modernizing Coast Guard

The Senate bill will modernize and enhance the capacity of the Philippine Coast Guard, particularly in addressing the pressing challenges in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

Escudero stressed emphasized the urgency of the bill, saying, “The PCG has been around for the longest time. However, it has never been the subject of any modernization attempt, especially given the current issues we face in the WPS”. His statement underscores the necessity for the PCG to evolve in response to contemporary maritime security challenges.

The PCG modernization program focuses on several key areas: improving the operational capabilities of the PCG, stabilizing personnel ranks, ensuring competitive salaries, and providing adequate provisions for longevity pay.

These changes aim to attract and retain skilled personnel within the organization, thereby enhancing its effectiveness in safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests.

As the Philippines continues to navigate complex geopolitical waters in the WPS, the reorganization of the PCG is positioned as a critical step toward strengthening national maritime security.
