In a major boost to the country’s healthcare and service sectors, American healthcare giant Bon Secours Mercy Health (BSMH) has announced plans to invest up to US$500 million to build a state-of-the-art tertiary hospital in the Philippines, while also expanding its Global Business Services (GBS) operations in Metro Manila.
The announcement came from the Office of the Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs (OSAPIEA) ahead of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s meeting with US President Donald Trump on trade and tariff talks.
BSMH — a US$13-billion Catholic healthcare system based in the United States — revealed that its current Manila-based GBS workforce of 170 professionals will be expanded to 1,200, supporting over 50 hospitals and 1,200 care sites in the US and Ireland.
The expanded GBS hub will be operated by its local subsidiaries, Nordic and BSMH Philippines, providing IT and back-end services for its global network.
Even more significant is BSMH’s plan to invest between US$300 million to US$500 million to establish a premium hospital in the Philippines — a project that could redefine the quality of healthcare services available to Filipinos.
“As a US$13-billion integrated Catholic health delivery system, we’re proud to expand our global reach and deepen our commitment in the Philippines,” said BSMH president and CEO John Starcher. “We’re excited to aggressively explore a new, world-class healthcare model that will offer premium access to both Filipinos and our associates worldwide.”
Special Assistant to the President Frederick Go welcomed the announcement, saying it marks one of the biggest private-sector healthcare investments by a US-based system in the Philippines.
“This is a strong vote of confidence in our country and a transformative opportunity for our healthcare and services sectors,” Go said. “We will work closely with BSMH to help turn these ambitious plans into reality — generating meaningful jobs and bringing advanced medical facilities and high-quality care to our people.”
If realized, the investment stands to position the Philippines as a growing hub for both healthcare innovation and global service support within the US-based health sector. TRACY CABRERA
