Catapang dismisses exit rumors

Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) chief Director General Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr. on Thursday brushed aside reports of his supposed imminent removal from office, describing them as fabricated and driven by “evil forces.”

In a statement, Catapang said the circulating claims about his replacement were baseless and intended to sow confusion.

“Our focus remains on our goals and the positive impact we strive to make,” he said.

He stressed that combating fake news and misinformation is vital not only to safeguard BuCor’s reputation but also to uphold the integrity of public institutions.

Catapang acknowledged the challenges that come with holding leadership roles in government, noting that the spread of false information erodes public trust.

“We are in an age where misinformation spreads like wildfire. It is crucial for the public to remain vigilant and discerning,” he said.

He also urged the public to practice critical thinking by verifying information and relying on credible news sources before accepting claims as truth.

Before his appointment as BuCor chief, Catapang served as the 45th Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

He succeeded Gerald Bantag, who was indicted on charges of allegedly using inmates as hitmen for targets outside prison facilities. Bantag remains at large.
