Outgoing Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian expressed optimism that relations between the Philippines and China will “return to the right track” despite ongoing challenges, including tensions in the West Philippine Sea.
Speaking at China’s National Day reception in Taguig City Thursday night, Huang said dialogue has been vital in keeping bilateral ties stable over the past five years of his posting.
“The challenges we face today are but passing moments in the long course of history,” he said. “Through the continued efforts of people of vision, we will overcome the difficulties before us and bring our relations back onto the right track of sound and steady development.”
Huang also emphasized the “strong calls to deepen ties” from different sectors of Philippine society and expressed confidence that the friendship between the two nations “will stand the test of time.”
The envoy did not directly mention maritime disputes but acknowledged that disagreements remain. Over the years, the Philippines has lodged multiple diplomatic protests against Beijing over Chinese actions in the West Philippine Sea.
In a farewell meeting on Sept. 19, Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro affirmed Manila’s commitment to keep diplomatic channels open and pursue “future-oriented” cooperation with China.
Huang assumed his post in December 2019 after presenting his credentials to then-President Rodrigo Duterte.
