The Philippine National Police recently cautioned content creators against using police uniforms without authorization, citing legal repercussions.
PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said impersonating law enforcement, even for entertainment, is a serious offense. The warning follows a viral photo of a vlogger wearing the PNP ceremonial blue uniform, which violates the law on unauthorized use of uniforms or insignia.
“We are taking this matter seriously. We are now investigating this matter to determine accountability and to send a message that there are consequences for the unauthorized use of police uniforms,” Nartatez said.
Article 179 of the Revised Penal Code allows imprisonment of up to six months for illegal wearing of the PNP uniform or insignia. Nartatez stressed that the uniform symbolizes state authority and the sacrifice of every officer.
He also noted the risks posed by modern technology, including artificial intelligence, which can produce misleading images or videos impersonating police officers. “We urge everyone to verify content before sharing because disinformation undermines public trust and safety,” Nartatez said.
