The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has identified eight priority research and development (R&D) programs to drive national innovation.
Launched on February 5 at Dusit Thani Manila, ELEV8PH: Pushing S&T Frontiers for National Development gathered industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers to discuss advancements in science and technology.
DOST Undersecretary for Research and Development Dr. Lea J. Buendia emphasized the importance of collaboration, while DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. highlighted the initiative’s role in fostering national progress.
“Through these priority areas, DOST is committed to elevating science and technology frontiers for national development,” he said, urging collective action to push innovation forward.
The priority areas include Artificial Intelligence Virtual Hubs, Quantum Computing Technologies, Smart Technologies, Smart Agriculture, Geospatial Analysis, Industry 4.0, Biologics in Pharma, and Circular Economy. These initiatives aim to enhance AI research, boost agricultural productivity, promote automation, and support sustainable practices.
Dr. Franz A. De Leon, Director of DOST-ASTI, noted the country’s rise in the 2024 Government AI Readiness Index, underscoring the need for seamless collaboration among scientists and researchers. Other discussions revisited key milestones, such as the launch of Diwata-1 and the Quantum Innovation Laboratory.
DOST-PCHRD Executive Director Dr. Jaime C. Montoya reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to pharmaceutical R&D, calling it the future of the country’s health sector. Leaders from various DOST institutions also underscored their dedication to advancing nuclear energy, sustainable textiles, and AI-driven food and nutrition research.
