‘Fiesta in America Expo 2024’ Shines with Four Spectacular Events

East Rutherford, NJ – ‘Fiesta in America’ pulled off another extraordinary week of events that culminated in the highly anticipated Fiesta in America Expo 2024. With four and a half major events packed into just a week—starting with the People’s Ball on August 11, followed by the restored “Jose Rizal” film watch party on August 13, and concluding with the Meet-and-Greet party on August 16 as well as the two-day Expo on August 17 and 18—Fiesta in America has proven itself to be a powerhouse of cultural celebration and business networking.

A grand return to 2 days of celebrations: Fiesta in America Expo 2024

Celebrating its 27th year, Fiesta in America Expo 2024 reaffirmed its status as the premier Filipino event in the northeastern United States by returning to its two-day format, the only Filipino festival doing so in the Northeast.

Held at American Dream for two days, Fiesta in America attracted 12,800 Filipino Americans and generated non-stop foot traffic of about 60,000 in foot traffic based on data from the second largest retail and entertainment complex. The Expo’s success not only highlighted the vibrant Filipino culture but also showcased its significant impact on the broader community.

Empowerment Awards gala: Honoring Filipino excellence

The festivities kicked off with the glamorous People’s Ball at the Marriott Newark Airport, where the Empowerment Awards 2024 celebrated the remarkable achievements of Filipinos in the US. Dr. Laura Garcia, Vice President for Community Relations at Fiesta in America and recognized for her exemplary leadership in nursing and community service, led the team in honoring the following honorees:

  • Augelyn Francisco: Awarded for Excellence in Filipino Culinary Awareness for her innovative approach to Filipino cuisine at Kabisera, with locations in Manhattan.
  • Dr. Catalina Suerte: Honored for her advocacy for inclusivity and her award-winning teaching career in special education in New York City.
  • Eric B. Bustamante: Recognized for his outstanding leadership as First Vice President and General Manager of PNB New York.
  • Luisa Felisilda Milone: Celebrated for her excellence in small business leadership, notably for her community-driven beauty and wellness center in New Jersey.
  • Maricar Taino: Newly appointed President of PAFCOM, recognized for her dedication to community leadership and cultural preservation.
  • Sahlee Manongdo: Awarded for her exceptional contributions to nursing leadership, with over 46 years of experience.
  • Dr. Francisca T. Velcek: A trailblazing pediatric surgeon, celebrated for her pioneering work in pediatric surgery and her influence as a mentor and leader in the medical community.

Rizal screening a resounding success 

The “Jose Rizal” film screening at LOOK Cinemas W57 in New York was a resounding success, drawing a sell-out crowd eager to witness the international premiere of the fully restored and remastered 1998 classic. 

The event, co-sponsored by the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) and the Manila International Film Festival (MIFF), featured a special appearance by MMFF Festival Director Rochelle Ona

Attendees were treated to a captivating talkback session with Gil Quito, a New York-based writer. The successful turnout, including a significant number of non-Filipino attendees, underscores Fiesta in America’s broad appeal and its role in bridging cultures through the power of film and cultural exchange.

A cultural extravaganza: fashion, music, and more

One of the standout moments of the Expo was a dazzling fashion show by acclaimed “Fashion Week” designer Carl Andrada. His Philippine-inspired designs captivated the audience, blending traditional heritage with modern aesthetics.

Musical performances by top Filipino and Filipino American artists, including Jessica Sanchez, Shane Ericks, Sounds of Manila, and the sibling pop sensation JAGMAC, further electrified the event. 

Business and cultural exchange: connecting communities

Fiesta in America Expo 2024 also served as a powerful platform for a total of 60 sponsors and exhibitors. Representatives from various Philippine cities, including Angeles City, Mati, Zamboanga, and Siargao, presented investment opportunities and showcased their islands. The cities and islands captivated the audience with beautiful video presentations on a 30 x 8  feet LED wall. It transported attendees to the stunning landscapes and vibrant cultures of their regions.

Mayor Sol Matugas of General Luna, Siargao introduced the Siargao delegation, which included officials from six municipalities. Angeles City and Zamboanga also showcased the beauty of their cities through captivating video presentations.

This year’s event was further enriched by the participation of major sponsors Liberty Insurance and the New Jersey Department of Health.

Healthcare and family activities: a commitment to community well-being

In partnership with Englewood Health, Fiesta in America offered free healthcare screenings, including blood pressure and cholesterol checks, underscoring the importance of health within the Filipino American community. 

Supporting small businesses: celebrating Filipino craftsmanship

Fiesta in America 2024 proudly spotlighted Filipino American small businesses and local crafts from the Philippines. Attendees had the opportunity to purchase high-quality, handmade products such as intricate textiles from Ilocos and Capiz shell ornaments, directly supporting the artisans and their communities. 

A memorable Santacruzan: celebrating faith and tradition

No Filipino event is complete without the vibrant Santacruzan procession, a traditional Filipino celebration honoring the finding of the True Cross by Queen Helena. Held at Court A of American Dream, the procession featured sagalas in stunning gowns, floral arches, and a brass band, creating a festive atmosphere.
