The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has reaffirmed its readiness to implement contingency measures to safeguard overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Taiwan as tension with China escalates.
Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac stated on Friday that the DMW is maintaining close coordination with Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) Chairperson and Resident Representative Cheloy Garafil to ensure a swift response if the situation deteriorates.
“The DMW, in coordination with MECO and the Migrant Workers Offices (MWOs) in Taiwan, is closely monitoring the situation,” Cacdac said.
“We thank MECO Chairperson Garafil for her leadership and assurance of the general well-being of our OFWs, in close coordination with Taiwan authorities.”
The heightened tension stems from China’s military exercises surrounding Taiwan, which Beijing describes as drills for “precision strikes” and a potential blockade. China considers Taiwan a breakaway province and has threatened to reclaim the island by force if necessary.
Cacdac noted that approximately 250,000 Filipinos live and work in Taiwan.
“To our OFWs and their families, we urge you to remain calm and stay informed through official government channels. Trust that the Philippine government is committed to your protection and welfare,” he said.
