President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Friday announced that Japan’s Kanadevia Corporation is set to invest in a major Waste-to-Energy (WtE) project that aims to transform Metro Manila’s waste disposal system into a sustainable energy source.
“I’m pleased to share that we are working with Japan’s Kanadevia Corporation on a landmark Waste-to-Energy project for Manila,” the President said in a Facebook post, following a meeting with the company’s executives during his working visit to Osaka, Japan.
“This initiative will turn thousands of tons of waste into clean energy, reduce flooding, create jobs, and help clean up communities,” he added.
Kanadevia is partnering with Phil. Ecology Systems Corp., a key player in solid waste management in the Philippines, for the development of the project.
According to the Presidential Communications Office (PCO), the project will reduce dependence on landfills while generating clean power for the National Capital Region. Discussions also covered plans to develop the facility at the former Smokey Mountain landfill site in Tondo, Manila.
“Discussions focused on the proposed development at the former Smokey Mountain landfill site,
which aims to convert residual solid waste into renewable energy, improve flood mitigation and rehabilitate degraded urban areas,” the PCO said.
Kanadevia is known for its cutting-edge environmental technologies, including advanced WtE facilities and water treatment solutions. It will serve as both a co-investor and a technology provider in the Manila WtE project.
The project is expected to support key national goals, such as improved waste management, renewable power generation, job creation, increased foreign investments, and environmental rehabilitation.
