Jayson Edward Ramirez: Filipino Freediving Phenomenon rises

In the vibrant waters off Mabini, Batangas, where the ocean depth mirrors the sky’s limitless expanse, young Filipino free diver Jayson Edward Ramirez has carved out a legacy in the making.

Against the challenges of limited training time and the harsh disruptions of Typhoon Kristine, he defied the odds, reaching an astonishing depth of 85 meters. With this incredible dive, he claimed his seventh National Record, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in Philippine freediving.

His journey is rooted in resilience and passion. Beginning his underwater journey in January 2021 with Freedive Tribe PH, he was immediately drawn to the silence and serenity of the depths, finding a challenge unlike any other. Just three years later, he’s not only a certified instructor under the esteemed Molchanovs Program but also one of the most in-demand instructors in Batangas. Teaching at Freedive Tribe PH, he has inspired a new wave of Filipinos to explore the ocean’s depths, fostering a community of aspiring freedivers eager to test their own limits.

Despite being relatively new to competitive freediving, he’s already made a significant impact. Starting his competitive journey in October of last year, he has rapidly ascended through the ranks, setting and breaking records in an incredibly short time frame. The recent Mabini Depth Quest showcased not just his skill, but his mental toughness.

But this 85-meter milestone is just the beginning. Ambitiously eyeing the 100-meter mark, he has his sights set on even greater depths and grander stages. He’s preparing to represent the Philippines at the prestigious AIDA and CMAS World Championships, either next year or within the next two years.

The Mabini Depth Quest was, for him, not just a competition but a testament to what can be achieved with grit and perseverance. In his own words, it was “one of the best experiences”—a blend of thrill, challenge, and fulfillment that has left him hungry for more.

As he pushes toward 100 meters and the world championships, his journey continues to inspire. From his humble beginnings to becoming a sought-after instructor and record-setting athlete, he’s not just setting records—he’s setting an example of what it means to pursue one’s passion against all odds. And with every dive, he’s taking the spirit of the Philippines deeper into the ocean, proving that the only limits are the ones we set for ourselves.
