Lawmakers urge resolution to stalled Makati Subway project

Senators Ramon Revilla Jr. and Alan Peter Cayetano are urging stakeholders to find a way forward for the stalled P200-million Makati City Subway project, which private proponent Philippine Infradev Holdings Inc. recently deemed unviable due to a territorial conflict with Taguig City.

The company announced that the project, initiated in 2018 as a public-private partnership with the Makati City government, is no longer financially and operationally feasible. This follows the 2021 Supreme Court decision that transferred jurisdiction of several key barangays—some along the subway’s planned route—from Makati to Taguig.

Calling the development “unfortunate,” Revilla expressed concern for residents who had been anticipating better transport access through the subway.

He urged both Makati and Taguig to find common ground to revive the project, acknowledging that existing contractual obligations could complicate the matter following the Supreme Court’s ruling.

“At the end of the day, this is a contractual matter between the local government of the City of Makati and its chosen builder. We are hoping for a resolution benefiting the public,” he said.

Cayetano, meanwhile, clarified that Taguig was never consulted about the subway plan and has never opposed its development.

“There has never been a dispute from Taguig’s side. In fact, we were never formally consulted about it to begin with,” he said.

He echoed Revilla’s call for action, highlighting the project’s potential to address Metro Manila’s transportation woes.

“Taguig has always been open to projects that provide real benefits to the public, and this includes the proposed subway,” Cayetano added.
