Phl, China keep dialogue open amid sea disputes

Despite escalating tensions in the West Philippine Sea, the Philippines is keeping diplomatic channels open with China as both nations mark 50 years of ties this year.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro said her meeting Friday with Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian was “candid but constructive,” noting that recent incident-free resupply missions to the BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal showed the value of ongoing negotiations under the Provisional Understanding.

“As we celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations, we hope to continue our productive and future-oriented cooperation with China,” Lazaro posted on X.

The meeting followed Manila’s diplomatic protests over Beijing’s declaration of a “nature reserve” in Bajo de Masinloc and the Sept. 16 water cannoning of a Philippine vessel that injured a Filipino crew member.

The DFA stated that dialogue remains key to de-escalating tensions and managing maritime incidents through diplomatic means.
