Pope Leo XIV has issued a powerful appeal to world leaders, urging them to reject the path of war and embrace peace, warning that modern conflicts and advanced weaponry are dragging humanity into deeper barbarism.
Addressing the faithful during his weekly General Audience at Saint Peter’s Square, the pontiff echoed the words of his predecessors, Pope Francis and Pope Pius XII, to emphasize that “war is always a defeat” and that “nothing is lost with peace; everything can be lost with war.”
The Pope expressed deep anguish over the ongoing global conflicts, singling out the violence in Ukraine, Iran, Israel, and Gaza. “The heart of the Church is rent asunder by the cries rising up from places of war,” he said.
He cautioned against the growing normalization of warfare and condemned the increasing reliance on technologically advanced weapons, which, he warned, could lead to atrocities even more horrific than those of past wars. “
We must never become accustomed to war but instead reject as a temptation the allure of powerful and sophisticated weapons,” he said.
Pope Leo XIV concluded his remarks with a direct call to global leaders, invoking the wisdom of previous pontiffs: “Therefore, in the name of human dignity and international law, I repeat to those responsible what Pope Francis used to say: ‘War is always a defeat!’ And with Pius XII, ‘Nothing is lost with peace. Everything can be lost with war.” TRACY CABRERA
