Predatory Lending

The Senate’s inquiry into the abusive debt collection practices of online lending companies is both timely and necessary.

With complaints surging against rogue lenders resorting to public shaming, threats, and harassment, urgent action is needed to curb these unethical tactics.

Senator Raffy Tulfo’s strong stance against these practices reflects the growing public outcry over violations of borrowers’ rights. While debts must be repaid, resorting to intimidation, libel, and coercion is unacceptable.

These actions not only breach the Data Privacy Act but also exploit vulnerable Filipinos already struggling with financial burdens.

Beyond aggressive collection, concerns were also raised over exorbitant interest rates, some as high as 50 percent, which trap borrowers in endless cycles of debt.

Regulatory agencies must strictly enforce lending laws, hold violators accountable, and ensure ethical lending practices that protect consumers from financial abuse.

This investigation should lead to concrete reforms—stronger enforcement, heavier penalties, and greater transparency in digital lending.

Without decisive action, predatory lenders will continue to exploit the financially distressed, turning short-term relief into long-term suffering.
