As the Philippines commemorated the 128th anniversary of the Proclamation of Independence, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. delivered a timely reminder that the defense of freedom remains a continuing responsibility for every Filipino. While the battles fought by our heroes in the 19th century were against colonial rule, today’s challenges demand a different kind of courage—one rooted in truth, unity, and responsible citizenship.
The President’s call to “protect truth from distortion” speaks directly to the realities of the digital age. Misinformation, disinformation, and the rapid spread of false narratives through social media have become threats to democratic institutions worldwide. In an era where information travels faster than ever, discerning fact from fiction has become an essential civic duty.
History reminds us that Philippine independence was achieved through sacrifice, patriotism, and collective action. From the revolutionary ideals of Andres Bonifacio and the Katipunan to the leadership of General Emilio Aguinaldo, Filipinos united behind a common dream of self-determination. On June 12, 1898, that dream was proclaimed in Kawit, Cavite, marking a defining moment in the nation’s journey.
Today, however, freedom faces new tests. Corruption, poverty, political polarization, economic uncertainty, global conflicts, and climate change continue to challenge national progress. These issues cannot be solved by government alone. They require active participation from citizens who place the country’s welfare above personal interests.
The President rightly emphasized that genuine leadership is measured by service and sacrifice. Equally important is the role of ordinary Filipinos in safeguarding democratic values, promoting accountability, and fostering unity despite differing views. Trust, once weakened by division and suspicion, can only be rebuilt through honesty, transparency, and shared responsibility.
Despite the obstacles, there is reason for optimism. The Filipino spirit has consistently demonstrated resilience in times of crisis, whether during natural disasters, economic hardships, or national emergencies. Compassion, courage, and bayanihan remain enduring strengths of the nation.
As we honor the sacrifices of past generations, we must remember that peace, sovereignty, and freedom were hard-won. Preserving them requires vigilance, wisdom, and unwavering love for the Philippines. Independence is not merely a historical achievement—it is a continuing mission entrusted to every Filipino.
