The Philippines’ commitment to global road safety took center stage when it joined other countries in the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Marrakech, Morocco last February 18-20, 2025.
Transportation Secretary Jaime J. Bautista said the Department of Transportation’s (DOTr) Active Transport, EDSA Busway, and Public Transport Modernization Program (PTMP) are integral programs promoting road safety.
The transport chief emphasized the need for drivers’ education, dedicated bus lanes, roadworthiness of public utility vehicles, and sustainable transport solutions.
“By designing roads with all users in mind, enforcing speed limits, and promoting a culture of shared responsibility, we can create streets where everyone feels safe,” Sec. Bautista said.
Meanwhile, the transport chief said massive infrastructure projects such as expressways, railways, airports, and seaports, are designed to spur economic activity, especially in the countryside.
“By improving connectivity, we are unlocking the potential of rural areas, creating new economic hubs, and providing Filipinos with greater access to opportunities,” said Sec. Bautista on the sidelines of the conference.
With limited fiscal space, Sec. Bautista noted the private sector as a vital partner in nation-building.
“Through public-private partnerships (PPPs), we have been able to leverage private investment, expertise, and efficiency to deliver top-quality transport systems and facilities,” he said.
