What if the dream match comes true?

Talks of a possible superfight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. have been revived and talked about after the Filipino boxer’s shellacking of Chris Algieri nearly two weeks ago.

His promoter, Bob Arum, even revealed that backdoor negotiations are currently taking place between CBS and HBO to pave the way for the most lucrative boxing match ever.

What has not been hyped however, is what if the dream match comes true. What are the chances of both boxers?

A fight analyst believes Pacquiao has a very strong chance of beating a slick fighter like Floyd Mayweather Jr. due to several factors.

David Phillips expounded in The Sweet Science why the eight-division champion from the Philippines poses a formidable challenge against the reigning pound-for-pound champion.

“Both fighters have extremely fast hands. However, Manny is more likely to let his go, resulting in higher volume,” he said.

While Mayweather could dodge most of Pacquiao’s power punches, Phillips said judges at the ring side are more likely to favor the Filipino due to his aggression and activity.

Phillips added that unlike the old Pacquiao, the fighting congressman is no longer just a brawler. He said the Filipino has been using his quick feet to unload his fists and evade incoming punches.

“Manny’s footwork and angles are not comparable to any other fighter in the game today. Manny’s quick feet allows him to be offensive and defensive at the same time. He can throw punches from almost any position and be difficult to hit due to that unpredictability. For a great offensive fighter, he’s seldom exactly where you expect him to be,” said the boxing pundit.

Phillips said Pacquiao’s punching power and superior timing are perhaps the Filipino fighter’s best attributes.

“Manny probably hits harder than anyone Floyd has ever fought. He also lands an unusually high percentage of blows during any given fight,” he said.

“In short, Floyd’s just never seen    anything like Manny before. A quick drawing, powerful volume puncher, who is both highly skilled and highly unorthodox. He will be challenged.”

Phillips also pointed out that Pacquiao has done extremely well against fighters Mayweather has previously fought.

Mayweather won by split decision over Oscar dela Hoya, who quit on his stool after 8 rounds against Pacquiao.

Mayweather also needed 10 rounds to dispose Ricky Hatton. Pacquiao knocked out the Brit in two.

Both Pacquiao and Mayweather won by unanimous decision over Shane Mosley, but the Filipino was able to knockdown “Sugar Shane” once.

Mayweather won by unanimous decision against Miguel Cotto, who was stopped by Pacquiao via 12th round TKO.

The only exception was Juan Manuel Marquez, said Phillips. Mayweather won by a lopsided decision against the Mexican, who knocked out Pacquiao in their last fight. Pacquiao, however, defeated Marquez twice before knockout loss.
