The Quezon City Film Commission (QCFC) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) officially launched the Young Creative Challenge (YC2) Film Lab through a formal Ceremonial Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing held December 12 at the Dengcar Theater, Mowelfund Plaza, Quezon City.
This landmark initiative, part of the Malikhaing Pinoy Program, is set to redefine Filipino creativity in the screenwriting category by providing a comprehensive platform for young filmmakers aged 18-35. With an eight-month program structured around mentorship, workshops, and market readiness, the YC2 Film Lab is designed to empower participants to transform their screenplays into production-ready feature films that are creatively compelling and globally competitive.
The signing ceremony marked a significant step in advancing the national goal of positioning the Philippines as Asia’s leading creative hub by 2030. Representatives from QCFC and DTI underscored the program’s potential to elevate Filipino storytelling and its alignment with the country’s broader cultural and economic development goals.
“This partnership reflects our shared vision of fostering a thriving creative ecosystem in the Philippines,” said Liza Diño, Executive Director of Quezon City Film Commission during a follow-up media conference held at Limbaga 77 restaurant in Quezon City December 12.
“Through the YC2 Film Lab, we are not only nurturing homegrown talent but also ensuring their stories resonate on the global stage.”
Usec. Rafaelita Aldaba added, “By investing in Filipino creativity, we are cultivating an industry that drives economic growth and attracts international co-production and funding opportunities.”
The YC2 Film Lab will focus on four key phases:
● Story Development: Refining scripts and deepening character and thematic elements.
● Production Design and Feasibility: Integrating practical production considerations.
● Pitching and Packaging: Developing skills to secure funding and partnerships.
● Market Readiness: Positioning projects for international audiences and distribution opportunities.
The program culminates in a pitching event, where participants will present their projects to a panel of local and international producers, distributors, and festival programmers.
The YC2 Film Lab is a testament to the QCFC and DTI’s commitment to nurturing young Filipino filmmakers and preparing them for the demands of a competitive global industry. The program’s impact is expected to be far-reaching, with participants set to develop exportable films that amplify Filipino narratives and attract international investment.
